Coworking and flexible office space have been expanding in large metropolitan cities for years. With the hustle of everyday urban life, it’s clear to see why these creative hubs are popping up everywhere in big cities. However, in a post-COVID world, as professionals and their families increasingly seek the benefits of small-town living, coworking has seen extensive growth in suburbs and rural areas.
Vert Coworking is the latest to come onto the Northern Colorado coworking scene and is under construction in Estes Park, CO. The town, with a permanent population of around 6,000, hosts a large number of the 4+ million visitors to Rocky Mountain National Park annually. Responding to the spike in work-from-anywhere lifestyles, Vert is designed to serve outdoorsy and community-minded business professionals in Estes and across the Front Range.
Owners Alix and David LaSalle bring their sense of adventure and community after retiring from the United States Air Force, where they met and shared common interests in traveling, working hard, and supporting the communities in which they lived.
When asked what gave them the inspiration for Vert, David says, “As a small business owner, I know how tough it is to pay for office facilities and productivity tools. Coworking allows solopreneurs, startups, and other small businesses to have great working conditions at an affordable price with flexibility. Second, there is plenty of data that shows the role a supportive expert network and ecosystem can play in startup success. Coworking creates that opportunity. Finally, Alix and I are all about community. Our military backgrounds, with constant moves but super close relationships with our comrades – especially while deployed – made us crave community in retirement. We want to create a place for like-minded people to gather, encourage and challenge each other to live amazing lives.”
The 15,000 sq. ft building was purchased in 1995 by Dr. & Mrs. Spence, who then renovated it into the Rocky Mountain Health Club, which operated from 1996 until now. After Vert opens, the club will be slightly rebranded as RMHC@Vert and will primarily serve as an amenity for the coworking members. The Vert campus, with fiber broadband, ergonomic office furniture, wellness facilities and classes, Estes Park Rock Climbing’s bouldering gym, easy access to year-round outdoor recreation, and chiropractic and massage therapists on site, is perfect for the active and driven Northern Colorado professional seeking a productive, balanced life.
Community Centered Impact
Alix and David are passionate about the community of Estes Park and the people it serves. The owners are active in philanthropic causes and have a special place in their hearts for organizations like Challenge Aspen and the Estes-based non-profit Flinch Forward that help support veterans and first responders. The owners themselves are veterans and feel honored to work with individuals in the community who share those experiences and have a desire to serve those who volunteer to protect society.
Vert is planning to open officially in mid-October but already offers flexible membership options ideal for the busy lifestyles of the coworking clientele. “Estes Park has a number of solopreneurs and remote enterprise employees who have been working from home and who have expressed an interest in workspace that better meets their needs. Vert will help provide that and as word spreads, the team hopes to attract others with similar values. The Estes Park Economic Development Strategy created in response to the devastating 2013 flood specifically identified a coworking space as one of the elements to building a more resilient Estes economy,” says David.
Alix and David are excited about the transformation of the building and launch of the business next month, despite the financial risks and challenges. “We’re stretching pretty hard to make this happen and are actively seeking a partner or partners who share our vision for serving Estes’ entrepreneurs and small business professionals, and our desire to help promote a vibrant, resilient economy that benefits all who reside in the area. Estes is an amazing place full of extraordinary people – we love participating in this mountain adventure.”
